Willamette Invite

with somewhere around 1600 athletes at the invintational and 36 of them in the javelin i was hoping for some good weather to really throw far. but i wasnt going to get that

after pulling a hamstring a few months ago and re-agrivating it a couple times i took about 45 days off from running. to a thrower that sounds great. but i was training for the decathlon and sprints are my worst event so no running meant i was going to be out of shape. but once spring break got over just last week i started doing sprints with cody fleming the throws/jumps coach at LaneCC. and i started lifting for the first time in probably a month too. needless to say i was incredibly sore, and not just my legs but my whole body. this willamette meet was not looking good.

we got there and the ground was wet, the wind was blowing and there were some nasty clouds in the sky as far as the eye could see. the weather wasnt going to let up. i didnt expect to throw far at all. the whole week of practice was sucky weather and i never threw much, i was sore all over, the weather was as bad as could be. there was nothing going my way.

we dont have any good javelins at lane so i always check out other teams' javs to see who has the best and i ask the team if i could use it. spokane had a nice 90 meter high quality steel tailwind javelin and i asked Gabe Rodriguez from spokane if i could use it. he said yes. i had marked off my approach at about 8 1/2 javelin lengths from the foul line but on my first throw i was way too close for comfort. i shortened up and slowed down so that i wouldnt foul. i barely made it. 204'6" it was around my season PR so i was happy. with that throw i knew i could probably win the meet. but its not about winning the meets to me its about getting myself better. i know i can throw much farther i just need to do it in a meet so that its on paper and a throw that might possibly qualify me for bigger meets.

on the second throw i moved back an extra step so that i wouldnt be so worried about the foul line. the throw was through the point and low. but seemed to have a lot of velocity. i could have closed my eyes and knew that the throw was far. the stands were filled with amazement. i figured my team was watching and shouted with their supoprt of a good throw. official mark was right below 66.30 meters or 217'6" that was enough for a new school record by 3'4" and really made my day.

the weather sucked the wind was bad (a strong tail wind almost the worst wind u can have) and i still threw far. when the meet was over and done i just thought of how undeserving i was of that throw. i was sore and practices were bad, but i think God has plans for me, he is allowing me to throw farther and farther. i hope his plans are for me to go to the trials in june. i know that God has given me a special ability to throw javelin and i hope to meet a lot of people and be able to change some lives along the way. i hope to throw farther. and with God i have no limit to how far i can throw
