Getting Better with each meet

The last time i threw was at the oregon twilight on may 9th. i was surrounded by some of the best javelin throwers in the nation and i had to step it up inorder to place high. this last weekend (may 22-23) i was surrounded by my community college athletes and my previous mark put me 30 ft ahead of the closest competitor. it was a totally different kind of atmosphere to be throwing in. my previous mark (233'7") qualified me for the B standard of the Olympic Trials in Eugene Oregon this June. but it only makes me 33rd in the nation (2007-2008) in order to actually go to trials you have to be top 24. i would need 9 people to get sick, get injured, not be able to make the meet, or flat out not come in order for me to go to trials. i cant rely on something like that so i was determined to throw farther in my last meet of the year at our NWAACC (North West Athletic Association of Community Colleges) Conference meet in Spokane Washington

i was going to need perfect conditions a lot of support from my team mates, and a lot of help from God to get me to throw in the top 24. i was shooting for 240-245 ft which would place me around 10-17th place. a week before the meet i checked the weather report in spokane everyday to see how my throwing weather conditions were going to be. and thats where the bad news comes. it was supose to be 61 degrees and 50% chance of rain showers with 10-15 mph winds and 25 mph gusts. i instantly thought of our shasta invintational in redding california where there were 20mph winds and i only threw 206' i was going to need better weather than that to throw big. i prayed to God for just an opening in the weather for 1 throw so i could make it happen and i was confident that he would provide and that i would still PR despite the weather conditions.

John 14:13 Jesus said "And I will do whatever you ask in My Name, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father."

i remembered that verse from the bible study groups i have on tuesday nights and i was going to take advantage of that. i even custom made a T-Shirt that i was going to wear inorder to give the glory to God for the abilities he has given me. it says on the back "I throw for God" and in smaller letters "because his son died for me" it was simple yet is was everything it needed to be and i couldnt wait to wear it.

i prayed everyday asked for strength and energy to get the job done. and i was confident that God could make anything happen. Day one arrived in spokane and i did long jump. i got a new PR 20'6" its not that great but i havent really ever done it before. i got 8th place and took 1 point. but i had bigger fish to fry on the second day (the javelin) the weather was amazing tho. it was suppose to be 62 degrees cloudy and probably rain and it didnt start sprinkling untill 3pm. if we had the same day on friday i knew i would PR big.

but friday rolled around and the weather as not looking good. we set up tents and not long after we tore them down before the wind torn them down. we had about a 15mph constant wind coming left to right on the javelin runway. its basically the worst wind a right handed thrower can have. i was a little worried. and Cody talked about 210 feet being the winning throw of the day. but i was in the zone and i had a different idea of what MY winning throw was going to be. i was quiet and collected i had to go big. it was clutch time.

first flight got over and it was lightly sprinkling and the wind only died down a bit. the best mark was 183' by gabe rodriguez from spokane. i was warming up from a 4 step and throwing around 196' which is pretty good. every time i didnt that in a meet or in practice i threw over 220'. it gave me extreme confidence that i could throw big.

first throw was up and the wind about knocked me back on my approach. but it was still far. just short of the 70 meter line. 225' everyone was impressed with the throw, but i knew i was going to go bigger. second throw was up and i was in the lead by a long shot. it was me and the goal of the olympic trials. my team was there to support me and it was amazing. i was pumped up and ran hard. i threw thru the point and the javelin just seemed to hang in air. all i could think was 80 meters..... 80 meters.... it landed just past the 70 meter line but i knew it was big. i could see a lot of grass between the line and my jav. i looked to see what it was marked as and it was called out at 73.63 meters or about 241'7" that was good enough for 16th in the nation and 5th in all of college. i was embarking on territory never seen by anyone i know. it was good enough for olympic trials. and it was all because of the help and support of my team and God letting it all happen.

i had taken the NWAACC meet record, and NWAACC record and beat my school record by another 8 ft. i won first place by 50 ft and won the men's most outstanding field athlete award. it was an unexpected honor that i got to hold but it has all made me so happy and made me understand the amazing things that can happen when you do anything with God on your side. i cant wait to see how far he takes me and i thank my team, my friends and my family for supporting me on my journey.
